Nanny 911

One mama wrote this and I thought it was really a good summary for all mothers...

organizer, housekeeper, cook, nurse, pharmacy, laundromat, nanny911, ... you name it. We have a big shoe to fill yet we don't complain about it. Just some appreciation or recognition would do, right?
An expat mama story

At one of the forums I frequent, this mama shared her story. I guess she must be an expat wife because at this forum, most of them are. In my previous posting, I have already blogged about life as an expat wife, so we should read this with that background in mind.

"my hubby is not those that shows he cares...not even to me but one of his colleague was away on biz trip and he sms her. not hubby's style, he can be working from morning to night and don't sms or call home.

we had dinner (some time back) with his team of staff, he was sitting beside her thru out the night, leaving the kids to play on their own and me talking to his other colleagues.(it wasn't like i know his colleagues as friends, it was my first time meeting them) altho there were two empty seats in between us, hubby continued sitting beside her instead of me.

i asked him about the events, he said his sms was official and the dinner, he was still looking at the kids. i find it a joke that it required him to "abandon" me so that he could look after our kids. i maybe oversensitive but given the environment i was in, how was i to look at them. then a few days later, my hubby sms me to tell me that other women maybe more successful or more beautiful than me but they don't come close and that he is committed to our marriage vows...do i trust him. married for ions, this was the first from him, it's kind of a little too late. you see, he is not the expressive type, rarely appreciate what i have done, rarely praise me or compliment me. even when i am sick, he has never stopped work to offer to look after the kids for a day, suddenly these words come in thru sms, do i accept it? when he has time, he would rather choose to sleep early than to talk to me....suddenly, it dawn on me that i have been the giving partner in this marriage while he is the receiving one perhaps that is why i am feeling the hurt even more...if i am oversensitive, then he is insensitive..."

A rather depressing posting in the forum but I believed, there are many more sad stories out there. Sometime back, there were also postings from women asking for lawyers in Shanghai who knows about foreign laws with regards to divorce.

When I was younger, I used to love to read this comic - Peanuts, there was one character called Charlie Brown. His friend, Lucy loved to call him 'block head' and I think sometimes, husbands are like that - 'block head'. (Actually, there are also wives out there who are also 'block head')

Why 'block head'? If in all the years of marriage, you are a scrooge in expressing your love, do you expect your spouse to believe you when you finally did it and did it only when something bad happened? If in the marriage, love is often expressed, perhaps, this expat mama would be able to handle it better. Given the difficulties she has to go through as an expat wife, an expat mum, with no one to talk to but a stupid laptop, of course, depression sets in easily. Bette Miller used to sing this song "you got to laugh a little, give a little...that's the glory of love". Yes, learn to give a little all the time. It's like our stomache, starved it for days and stuffed it all of a sudden, it is going to collapse.

The head of the school which the kids are attending said that it is tough on the mothers because the fathers have to work very hard and long hours, the mother is there to shoulder everything herself. Quite true. The worst is that the mother cannot change her environment while the father can - from home to office, from office to home, while the mother can only change from kitchen to hall, hall to bedroom and wherever she goes, it is still the same place. While the father can engage in intellectual conversation with his bosses and colleagues, the mother can only casual talk with the aiyi and driver and not forgetting, children's talk with the kids. Is it any wonder that some expat wives ended as drinkers and smokers. Thank God, I cannot drink and I hate smoking...maybe I will be a glutton?

Many times, the pastor preached about letting go of the bitterness and anger, forgive and forget and move on. This is easiler said than done. For a woman who has gone through so much for ions, it takes an angel not a human to do just that. Let me illustrate with a life example.

Ann has a scar on one of her knees. Each time she looked at it, she always said, "koko pushed me". You see, it was an accident. They were both running along the pavement when we were still in the US. Kai just leaned towards her and being tiny, she was pushed off the pavement and she fell and had a big bruise on her knee. It has since healed but the scar remains and each time she looked at it, she blamed it on Kai. That's the reality, it is really difficult to forget when the hurt has been inflicted and the scar remained.

So, if you are a husband or wife reading this, head home today and express your love to your spouse, don't wait till something drastic happen then do it, it may be too late. Don't be the Mr Scrooge or Mrs Scrooge today.
My princess is now 5

One of the reasons for my mum's visit was also to celebrate Ann's birthday. The trip was planned in such a way which allowed grandma to celebrate her granddaughter's birthday.

Ann's mini birthday celebration in school and goody bags for all her classmates

The Chinese princess and her big brother

Just last year, we celebrated her 4th birthday at US and my sister, my uncle and gang were there too. Of course, our dear friends, the Loves were also there for the special day. With each passing year, my little girl is slowly blooming into a beautiful flower.
The mama's mama has arrived

Sorry, haven't been able to find time to update the blog as I was busy with my my first group of visitors. They came from Singapore and they were...

Mama 1 (my sister), big mama (my mother) and my uncle. Tucking into delicious hairy crabs.
Oh, all those empty plates...when yours truly cooked, nothing will ever be left behind

It was a busy week as the kids were still having school. So, I was like hanging on to my role as a mum which has always include being a nanny, tutor, chef, housekeeper and on top of that, a tour guide to my visitors and boy, time sure rocketed by.

I am sure you will enjoy the pictures below...

Brought them to visit the oldest temple in Shanghai

This wasn't Chinese opera. It was masking changing performance or what the Chinese called "pian lian".

During the weekends, we headed for an ancient town call Zhujiajiao. A beautiful own not to be missed when visiting Shanghai.

Entrance to the town

Kai trying to shoot...balloons while mummy and kids standing beside a smelly tofu seller. This is a delicacy. Of course, I tried...not too bad

Kai and Ann trying the different sedan chairs. The red one is meant for carrying the bride during a wedding ceremony

A hall in a typical Chinese house. Mama and kids in front of an old library

Inside a house garden and the kids along the river bank

Dressing up...here comes the bride

Malt candy in various animal shapes and pingtanghulu, a fruity, sugar-coated kebabs

Assorted sticky rice cakes and braised pork knuckles

Ancient ways of fishing

This has been one great trip to an ancient town. It was also my first time and it was indeed an eye opener. A few of the old towns have been commercialised, this is the more original one left standing.

A vegetable farm just right at my doorstep. My mum and gang also went to the village next door to have a look. What a beautiful surprise for them

That's it? Well, you don't need me to post all shopping trips do you? Like all Singaporeans, holiday is never complete with shopping trips. The rest of the time, they shopped till they dropped
The second greatest love story ever told...

There is no doubt...the greatest love story ever told was the love of Christ for mankind...no love is greater than the man who lay down his life for his friend.

We all know about the show 'Love Story', starring Ryan O Neal and Ali Macgraw. The famous line "love means never having to say you are sorry" , we all know so well. But the fact remained, although it was a great love story, it wasn't real, it was just reel. The second greatest love story (true-life) ever told, must be the story of Christopher Reeve (Superman?) and his wife, Dana Reeve.

From the media, we knew that Reeve had a bad fall from his horse and became paralyzed. A freak accident by all account but it happened. Life is such. But through it, we came to realise that true love still exist. Unconditional love which the Bible talks about is still taking place in a world we often call, cruel.

Reeve not only broke his neck but he was kept alive by a respirator and his wife stood by him till the day he died. While lying on the hospital bed, suggestions have been made to pull out the machine but his wife insisted that he should be kept alive and we all know that he was indeed kept alive till the age of 54 when he passed away.

Standing by your spouse who will be spending most of his life on bed, went beyond the marraige vows as Reeve told his wife. This brings the world hope in the midst of a high divorce rate. Does changing a partner means a better lifestyle...secret relationships are exciting but ultimately, the routine and mundane will set in...better to be faithful and appreciative to one.

With that kind of injury, no one would expect any recovery but Reeve did manage to move his fingers. Literary agent, Dan Strone wrote " I would never even hear any tension in her voice...Dana never panicked...she was unflappable. I never saw her crack - not once...There was a balance in their relationship that kept them both grounded. They lived for each other -"

Reeve had briefly entertained the idea of ending it but also admitted that it was his wife's love that pulled him back. Such was the power of their love!

Dana has been constantly praised and looked upon with admirations by many but she humbly said "I am just a woman whose husband fell off a horse, and I'm going to take care of him. That's what you do." This is the very reason what the marriage vow is about "for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health..till death do us part." If you have a healthy spouse, thank God for them.

Even Reeve's surgeon said that "without Dana, I doubt if Chris would have lasted more than a few days." It shows the power of love.

Not sure if this would be considered sad or happy...17 months after the death of Reeve, Dana passed away due to lung cancer. Perhaps, their love was made in heaven. They left behind a 13 year old son who have learned much about love and courage from his parents. They left behind a legacy of bravery and grace.

I am never into lovey, dovey books but in this land where English books are hard to come by, when I saw this at a bookshop, I just bought it and it was really a good and inspiring read. It made you think about what is really important in life. Recently, a fellow blogger had just lost her dad and she realised that her dad and mom shared a deeply rooted love relationship. Their 57 years together as husband and wife came to an end and it hurt her mom deeply. But the cycle of life is such...birth, childhood, adulthood, mid-life, old age, death. We all go through it, whether you are the king or the millionaire, a commoner or a beggar, no one will be spared.

While still alive, treasure what you have. There are no wrong marriages only stagnant ones.

I have an ex-colleague, she and her husband are still doing what they used to do during their courtship days and that is...Tuesdays are movie days. Yes, even after their marriage and having kids, he still pick her up from her office and both will go for movies every Tuesday...and we are talking about...for the last ten years, this hasn't changed.

Go on and do something for the one you love because time will slip by so quickly and before you know it, one will soon be gone.

For this Christmas, maybe this will be a perfect gift for all couples...

Look out for my next post as I open my door to my first group of visitors. Yahooo.......
This special bao...

This is called a "shen zian bao". It originated from Shanghai and I believed it is only here that you can see such bao. Very similar to your potstickers but the dough is a bread dough.

The base is deliberately fried till slightly burnt, then half a cup of water is poured into the pan and covered, cooked till the rest of the buns are well done. The taste? Need I say more?
The double R lamb...

The weather is turning freezing cold, I must say, it is as cold as Macungie, minus the snow. The locals are expecting some snowfall (yes, Shanghai does snow). Usually, at this time of the year, the Chinese will buy lamb to eat. It is a meat which they believe will keep their body warm.

I did the same too. I bought this boneless leg of lamb and grilled it. Simple recipe - rosemary and red wine, marinated the lamb overnight. But I had one concern, will the alcohol content caused an explosion when I grilled it in the oven. My dear son said that alcohol is combustible and it might just blow up. It got me worried and I sms a foodie friend in Singapore and he confirmed that it won't. So here it is...the double R lamb. Simple and delicious. Once again, it is proven, the simple things in life are the most enjoyable.

Yum...mo!
The upside down truth...

I found this from my US pastor's blog. The cleverest thing I have ever seen, read and listened.

I am sure you will be fascinated by it.

When you know, you understand...

Many of us often fail to understand people, situations, environment... and why we fail to understand, many times, it is because we fail to know. Profound?

Shanghai is a vibrant city but to really live here is not quite the same as holidaying here. It takes a lot to live here and so I am full of admiration for those who have survived here. This is not a place for the weak. It takes a lot of acceptance, love, patience and kindness to live in this city. Just like the other day, I was buying things at a huge store, there were many staff standing around chatting away but only one cashier was serving a long Q of customers. Frustrations, blood reaching boiling point but what can I do but to remind myself what the pastor preached on Sunday - "be patient, there is nothing you can do to change their culture." (Close friends will remember, many years ago at Malaysia, at one of the restaurants, yours truly was so impatient with the food, snail crawling out from the kitchen, actually went to the kitchen to bring out the food to serve everyone) Yes, I am such, if I can do to change the situation, I will but... in this case, I can't but to be PATIENT. One mama whom I know, who is always travelling with her husband and kids on his job, she is a true blue, seasoned 'relocated' mum. She said this one thing, "I have been to many countries and have stayed here for the past six years, this is the most trying country to live in."

Remember in my earlier blog, I wrote about how grown ups - adults peeping in public and I found that to be utterly disgusting. I couldn't hold on any longer (I have been afraid that he might feel offended), I decided to ask Mr Zhou as to why the men especially, like to peep in public. He explained to me that these men are not Shanghainese, they are people from other poorer province. To them, getting a job in Shanghai is like finding a pot of gold. Most of these people are truck or bus drivers and they work very hard to earn a living. Back in their village, most of their houses are not fitted with lavatories, they just do it in the open, so to them, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Even if they do have lavatories, there are no flush system, hence no habit of flushing after use.

I now know and I now understand. There is nothing I can do about them but there is something I can do about myself ... be tolerant, be accepting. So, don't be surprised when you next see me and I am no longer type A!
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
Wisdom to know the difference
The next sports woman in the making...

Ann had her games day and of course, mummy dearest was there to cheer for her and ...

her team won the first prize! Way to go, my little princess
